August’s Birthstones

July 26th, 2009

Peridot is the Modern birthstone & Sardonyx is the Traditional birthstone for the monthe of August.

The Zodiac stones are:

Sardonyx – birthstone of Leo (Lion): July 23 – Aug 22

Carnielian – birthstone of Virgo (Virgin): August 23 – Setpember 22

Peridot – (pair-a-doe) is the gem variety of olivine.

Peridot is perhaps derived from the French word peritot which means unclear, probably due to the inclusions and cloudy nature of large stones. It could also be named from the Arabic word faridat which means gem. In either case, peridot has been mined as a gemstone for an estimated four thousand years or better, and is mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of pitdah. Peridot gems along with other gems were probably used in the fabled Breastplates of the Jewish High Priest, artifacts that have never been found. The Greeks and Romans referred to peridot as topazion and topazius respectively and this name was later given to topaz, to end the confusion with the two gems. Historical legend has it that peridot was the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra. Pliny wrote about the green stone from Zagbargad Island in 1500 B.C.. Even until recently have jewelers used the term “chrysolite” (Latin for golden stone) in referring to peridot gems for some reason. This term has also been used to refer to other gemstones, of a more golden color.

Peridot is the best known gem variety of olivine, a species name for a series of magnesium-iron rich silicate minerals. Much of its recent popularity can be explained by its currently being recognized as the birthstone for the month of August, people wear the stone because it is supposed to bring the wearer success, peace, and good luck.

Peridot Mesa, located on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation east of Globe in Gila County, is the most productive locality for peridot in the world. A second Arizona location from which peridot is recovered is Buell Park Apache County, Arizona, about 16 kilometers north of Fort Defiance. However, it is estimated that 80% to 95% of the world’s production of peridot comes from the San Carlos Reservation.

Throughout time, peridot has been confused with many other gemstones, even emerald. Many “emeralds” of royal treasures have turned out to be peridots! And although peridot is distinctly a different shade of green, many jewelers refer to peridot as “evening emerald“. Emerald is a dark green as opposed to a yellow green and always contains inclusions. Other green gemstones confused with peridot include apatite (which is much softer); green garnets (have no double refraction), green tourmaline and green sinhalite (both of which are strongly pleochroic), moldavites (no double refraction) and green zircon (significantly heavier). All of these gemstones rarely have as nice a yellow component to their green color as does most peridot, but darker green peridot can be confusing when good crystal form is not discernible.

Sardonyx (sär-dŏn’ĭks, sär’dn-ĭks’)

The layers in these stones range from translucent to opaque. The stones vary in color, too. They may be white or gray, ranging to many colorful varieties. Sardonyx stones usually contain flat-banded, white and brownish-red bands. Onyx is a gemstone with alternating light and dark bands, which are colored in brown, red, black, white and gray.

The word Sardonyx is derived from the Greek, Sard meaning “reddish brown,” and onyx meaning “veined gem.” The name onyx was used by the Romans for a variety of stones including alabaster, chalcedony, and what is now known as onyx marble. Roman soldiers wore sardonyx talismans engraved with heroes such as Hercules or Mars, god of war. They believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and daring as the figured carved on it. During the Renaissance, sardonyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators.

Sardonyx at one time was more precious than gold, silver, or sapphire. Sardonyx is always widely used in cameos and intaglios.

In ancient times when stones were used for healing Onyx was used as a heart, kidney, nerve, capillary, hair, eye and nail strengthener. Onyx was said to help one sleep and was also said to help to eliminate apathy, stress and neurological disorders.  The ancients also believed this gemstone eliminated negative thinking, it was also believed to sharpen the wits of the wearer. Onyx was said to bring spiritual inspiration. It was a great assistance in holding emotions and passions under control. While Black Onyx was used to help one change habits.

Today most onyx is found in India and South America.

July’s Birthstones

July 26th, 2009

The traditional and modern birthstone for the month of July is Ruby.  The cabochon is Jasper.

The Zodiac stones are

Emerald – July 1st through July 22nd

Onyx     – July 23rd through July 31st

Ruby:
Pronounced: ru·by ()
A deep red, translucent variety of the mineral corundum, highly valued as a precious stone.

The finest ruby is the transparent type with a medium tone and a high intensity of slightly violet-red, which has been likened to the color of pigeon’s blood. Star rubies do not command comparable prices, but they, too, are in great demand. The ruby was among the first of the gemstones to be duplicated synthetically and the first to be used extensively in jewelry.
Rubies are mined in Africa, Asia, Australia, Greenland, Madagascar and North Carolina. They are most often found in Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Madagascar, and Cambodia, but they have also been found in United State, in the states of Montana, North Carolina and South Carolina. The Mogok Valley in Upper Myanmar has produced some of the finest rubies in the  past, but in recent years very few good rubies have been found there. The unique color in Myanmar (Burmese) rubies is described as “pigeon’s blood”. They are known in the trade as “Mogok” rubies. In central Myanmar the area of Mong Hsu also produces rubies. The latest ruby deposit to be found in Myanmar is situated in Nam Ya. In 2002 rubies were found in the Waseges River area of Kenya. Sometimes spinels are found along with rubies in the same rocks and are mistaken for rubies. However, fine red spinels may approach the average ruby in value.

Rubies have a hardness of 9.0 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Among the natural gems only diamond is harder.

Rubies occasionally show an optical phenomenon called asterism(light forms a star pattern) when cut into a cabochon (A highly polished, convex-cut, unfaceted gem). These are called “star rubies” are valuable because asterism is rare. They also very rarely show color change and chatoyancy (Having a changeable luster. Pronounced, (shə-toiənt).

What is Maille & Where Did It Come From?

March 3rd, 2009

The word Maille is derived from French meaning “mesh”, which comes from the Latin word “macula” meaning “mesh”.  Most people today use Maille or Chainmaille when referring to jewelry pieces to keep it from being confused with posted letters, “mail”, or types letters that are sent from one person to the other called “chain mail”.

Maille (also known as chainmail, chainmaille, chain mail, or chain maille), is a flexible weave  composed of small interlocking metal rings or loops of chain. Maille was historically used as armor from the 1st  millennium B.C. until the late 14th century, when it was gradually replaced by plate armor.  Maille was developed independently in both eastern and western cultures. It is used today for industrial armor, combat reenactment, jewelry, fashion design, and sculpture.

Most sources claim Maille to be an invention of the Celts but I have recently read an article that attributes the invention to an ancient people call the Scythians. It was used around the world as material-efficient armor for several centuries, until the introduction of plate armor around the 16th century.

Many of the patterns developed for chainmaille were so intricate and beautiful that jewelry was made from lighter rings using these patterns.  Many people own Chainmaille jewelry and don’t even know it.  If you own a Byzantine chain, then you own a piece of Chainmaille jewelry.  The Byzantine pattern is just one of many that is used to create Chainmaille jewelry.   In the next post on Maille we will give the different categories of weaves and a description of their characteristics.

Today, very few examples of ancient mail survive. The vast bulk of maille was broken up, and used as scouring pads through the late Middle Ages.

The Heart Shaped Face

This face is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin.  When picking out jewelry for this type of face it is beneficial to pick piece that will give width to the jaw line.

This can be accomplished by wearing earrings whose designs are wider at the bottom and narrower at the top (pear, tear or triangle) and that have some movement.  This will cause the eye to move from side to side giving the illusion of width.

To balance out the width of the forehead necklaces with strong horizontal lines of chunky beads will compliment your beauty.

As to hairstyles the perfect style for you is one that is chin length and lots of curls.  If you do want a longer look make sure the hairstyle has a lot of height to it.  The height will bring the attention to the hairstyle and not the face.  Bangs are not a must, nor are they a NO-NO.  If you do want bangs make sure they are not the blunt style but some thing with wisps or to the side of the face. Check out these celebrities who have oval faces to see their hairstyles and choice of jewelry.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Ashley Judd, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Claudia Schiffer, and Lucy Lawless just to name a few.

Here are some jewelry items that will flatter your face.

Working With What God Gave You – Part II

February 27th, 2009

The Square Face

A square face has clearly defined angles and a definitely resembles a box.  There are two different types of faces in this group.  One truly resembles a square and the other more resembles a rectangle.  Thought they require some different adornments to accent them they do share the need for jewelry that has curves in it to off set the sharp angles.

The strong wide chin of a square face needs a necklace with a focal point to draw the eye downward and long dangling earrings.  However, the rectangular face (more long than wide) needs to have that focal point close to the face rather than hanging down; so a choker would work better than a lariat or opera length necklace. A rectangular face should also avoid really long dangling earrings and opt for the shorter versions.  Though studs will look good, a small single drop round or curved style dangle will look good also.   Since circle jewelry is a real favorite right now you are in luck, and will find many different pieces to choose from ;)

For both the square and rectangular face a single drop round bead earring or a hoop type earring will bring out the best in your face, as well as large flat round beads or a few of them strung together to form a necklace or choker.  The beautiful fresh water pearl coin earrings and necklaces will go well with your natural beauty.

As to hair style, short-to-medium length hair that emphasize your cheekbones, especially with wave or roundness around the face, coming towards your face. Wispy bangs. Off-center parts, layering, height at the crown. If your hair is straight you may want to consider a body wave, adding some curl or wave to the hair will achieve a nice balance to the straight features of your face shape. Most of all avoid cuts that end at the jaw line or are above it, these are the worst for someone with a square face.

A good way to determine what cut will look good on you is to look a celebrity pictures of stars who have faces of your type.  The spend many hours making sure they look good, so why not cash in on it ;)   A few stars with your face type are Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Katie Holms, Jessica Simpson and Sandra Bullock.

These pieces will compliment a square face :)

Stones for those born in March

February 27th, 2009

The name Aquamarine is derived from Latin words meaning sea and water, therefore name “aquamarine” means sea water.

pronounced – aq·ua·ma·rine (ăk’wə-mə-rēn)

Aquamarine is also the anniversary gemstone for the 16th and 19th year of marriage.

Aquamarine

A symbol of beauty, honesty, and loyalty and is said to attract love and affection to the wearer.  The gem is found  in a wide range of blue shades, from the palest pastel to greenish-blue to a deep blue. The color of the stone does not necessarily decide the quality or price; though deeper blue gems are the rarest.  The clarity of the stone and the cut will usually determine the price not the color. As a rule of thumb the larger the stone the darker the color.  Aquamarine is one of the stones that if exposed to sunlight can fade so you should not leave it out where it is exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, nor would I wear it while sunbathing.

A word of caution when purchasing an aquamarine.  Some unscrupulous jewelers have been known to sell blue topaz (a less expensive gem) as aquamarines.

Gem lore
Aquamarine is said to work against nerve pain, glandular problems, toothache, and disorders of the neck, jaw and throat. It is said to strengthen liver and kidneys. Diminishes problems with eyes, ears and stomach, relieve coughs. Moreover, aquamarine is said to protect from perils of the sea, including seasickness. It is also said to help ease depression and grief.

Mystical power
Aquamarine is said to have a soothing effect on “just married” couples, assisting them in working out their differences and insuring a long and happy marriage. Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in long-married couples and signify the making of new friends.
It also provides courage and strengthens the will. Aquamarine protects against the wiles of the devil. Others say that the Aquamarine is an excellent stone for meditation.

Aquamarine is found in Brazil, India, Russia (Ural mountains) and USA (Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, North Carolina, Colorado and Vermont). Aquamarines are mined in a number of exotic places including Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique. Brazil is the source of the finest aquamarines.

Styles of Chain used in Jewelry Making

February 25th, 2009
Cable chain is the most commonly used extender chain on jewelry.  Cable chain has uniform round links.  This is the chain pictured when most people think about how chain looks.  Because the links are going one way and then the other when they are connected the chain will not lay flat.

Rolo chain is similar to the basic cable chain in that it is formed by linking placing the links one after the other.  Where it differs from cable chain is that it’s links are formed from half round wire of different gauges and not round wire.  This gives the chain a heavier look than cable chain using less silver content.  Also, Rolo chain can have oval or round links.

Curb chain is made of oval links that are slightly twisted so that the chain lays flat when the links are linked together.

Figaro or 3 and 1 chain is made from one long curb link followed by short curb links.  The common chain is one long link followed by three short links and the pattern is repeated.  There are 1 and 2 and 1 and 1 link variations to this style.  The common theme though is the one elongated link followed by one or more curb links.

Long and Short chain consists of a patter where there is one long oval link combined with shorter links.  The patterns will vary, some will have two, three or even four short links in-between the long links. It differs from the figaro because it does not lay flat since curb links are not used. Sometimes to enhance the patterns overall look, links made of twisted wire will be used in conjunction with plain wire links.  This gives the chain a textured look.

Figure “8″ chain is made from large curb links connected to each other by a smaller oval link that has been twisted into a figure “8″.  This makes a good extender chain because it is strong, lays flat and had large links to accommodate a clasp.

Most of these chains can be used as extender chain if their links are large enough to allow you to insert a lobster claw or spring ring clasp but the most commonly used are the Cable, Curb, Figaro and Figure ”8″ chain

Working with what God Gave you part 1

February 24th, 2009

In this series of posts I will deal with how to pick jewelry that will flatter your face shape.  Later on we will discuss body shapes and necklines.

Let us start with a round face shape.

If your face is round you will want to keep away from designs and beads with a round overall shape.  Also keep away from chokers and go with longer length necklaces that will create the illusion of having a longer face. If you really want to wear a choker then try and find one with a hanging or elongated center pendant or stone.  Wear necklaces with angular or irregular shaped beads or different size elongated drops (like teardrop shaped beads or pendants) will also help to add to the illusion of length.  Chose earrings wear square, rectangular, elongated teardrops or elongated ovals.  Any shape or style that will bring the eye downward will accomplish the desired effect.  You also want to keep away from rounded necklines on your tops as well.  V-neck, boat neck or square neck tops will give a pleasing contrast to a round face.

You are probably thinking that circles are in style and therefore you want to wear them to be in style.  Remember it is better not to be a fashion plate and look spectacular than to dress as fashion dictates and look awful!

To get the fashion look of circles without fighting your facial features wear jewelry with elongated ovals instead of perfectly round shapes.  This type of jewelry will flatter you, while giving the illusion of circles.

Here are some beauty tips for you :)

To make your face appear thinner, sweep bronzer over your temples, in the hollow under your cheekbones and under your chin using a fluffy brush.  Highlight your forehead, bridge of your nose, cheekbones and tip of your chin with a lighter powder.
Avoid slicked, up hair dos and opt for the longer hair styles.  Fluffy is also better than flat.  Shag cuts and layered bangs help to elongate the face.

Here are some items from our jewelry that make those will a round face look beautiful!
