The Square Face

A square face has clearly defined angles and a definitely resembles a box.  There are two different types of faces in this group.  One truly resembles a square and the other more resembles a rectangle.  Thought they require some different adornments to accent them they do share the need for jewelry that has curves in it to off set the sharp angles.

The strong wide chin of a square face needs a necklace with a focal point to draw the eye downward and long dangling earrings.  However, the rectangular face (more long than wide) needs to have that focal point close to the face rather than hanging down; so a choker would work better than a lariat or opera length necklace. A rectangular face should also avoid really long dangling earrings and opt for the shorter versions.  Though studs will look good, a small single drop round or curved style dangle will look good also.   Since circle jewelry is a real favorite right now you are in luck, and will find many different pieces to choose from ;)

For both the square and rectangular face a single drop round bead earring or a hoop type earring will bring out the best in your face, as well as large flat round beads or a few of them strung together to form a necklace or choker.  The beautiful fresh water pearl coin earrings and necklaces will go well with your natural beauty.

As to hair style, short-to-medium length hair that emphasize your cheekbones, especially with wave or roundness around the face, coming towards your face. Wispy bangs. Off-center parts, layering, height at the crown. If your hair is straight you may want to consider a body wave, adding some curl or wave to the hair will achieve a nice balance to the straight features of your face shape. Most of all avoid cuts that end at the jaw line or are above it, these are the worst for someone with a square face.

A good way to determine what cut will look good on you is to look a celebrity pictures of stars who have faces of your type.  The spend many hours making sure they look good, so why not cash in on it ;)   A few stars with your face type are Demi Moore, Angelina Jolie, Katie Holms, Jessica Simpson and Sandra Bullock.

These pieces will compliment a square face :)

Stones for those born in March

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The name Aquamarine is derived from Latin words meaning sea and water, therefore name “aquamarine” means sea water.

pronounced – aq·ua·ma·rine (ăk’wə-mə-rēn)

Aquamarine is also the anniversary gemstone for the 16th and 19th year of marriage.

Aquamarine

A symbol of beauty, honesty, and loyalty and is said to attract love and affection to the wearer.  The gem is found  in a wide range of blue shades, from the palest pastel to greenish-blue to a deep blue. The color of the stone does not necessarily decide the quality or price; though deeper blue gems are the rarest.  The clarity of the stone and the cut will usually determine the price not the color. As a rule of thumb the larger the stone the darker the color.  Aquamarine is one of the stones that if exposed to sunlight can fade so you should not leave it out where it is exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, nor would I wear it while sunbathing.

A word of caution when purchasing an aquamarine.  Some unscrupulous jewelers have been known to sell blue topaz (a less expensive gem) as aquamarines.

Gem lore
Aquamarine is said to work against nerve pain, glandular problems, toothache, and disorders of the neck, jaw and throat. It is said to strengthen liver and kidneys. Diminishes problems with eyes, ears and stomach, relieve coughs. Moreover, aquamarine is said to protect from perils of the sea, including seasickness. It is also said to help ease depression and grief.

Mystical power
Aquamarine is said to have a soothing effect on “just married” couples, assisting them in working out their differences and insuring a long and happy marriage. Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in long-married couples and signify the making of new friends.
It also provides courage and strengthens the will. Aquamarine protects against the wiles of the devil. Others say that the Aquamarine is an excellent stone for meditation.

Aquamarine is found in Brazil, India, Russia (Ural mountains) and USA (Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, North Carolina, Colorado and Vermont). Aquamarines are mined in a number of exotic places including Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan and Mozambique. Brazil is the source of the finest aquamarines.

Styles of Chain used in Jewelry Making

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009
Cable chain is the most commonly used extender chain on jewelry.  Cable chain has uniform round links.  This is the chain pictured when most people think about how chain looks.  Because the links are going one way and then the other when they are connected the chain will not lay flat.

Rolo chain is similar to the basic cable chain in that it is formed by linking placing the links one after the other.  Where it differs from cable chain is that it’s links are formed from half round wire of different gauges and not round wire.  This gives the chain a heavier look than cable chain using less silver content.  Also, Rolo chain can have oval or round links.

Curb chain is made of oval links that are slightly twisted so that the chain lays flat when the links are linked together.

Figaro or 3 and 1 chain is made from one long curb link followed by short curb links.  The common chain is one long link followed by three short links and the pattern is repeated.  There are 1 and 2 and 1 and 1 link variations to this style.  The common theme though is the one elongated link followed by one or more curb links.

Long and Short chain consists of a patter where there is one long oval link combined with shorter links.  The patterns will vary, some will have two, three or even four short links in-between the long links. It differs from the figaro because it does not lay flat since curb links are not used. Sometimes to enhance the patterns overall look, links made of twisted wire will be used in conjunction with plain wire links.  This gives the chain a textured look.

Figure “8″ chain is made from large curb links connected to each other by a smaller oval link that has been twisted into a figure “8″.  This makes a good extender chain because it is strong, lays flat and had large links to accommodate a clasp.

Most of these chains can be used as extender chain if their links are large enough to allow you to insert a lobster claw or spring ring clasp but the most commonly used are the Cable, Curb, Figaro and Figure ”8″ chain

Working with what God Gave you part 1

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

In this series of posts I will deal with how to pick jewelry that will flatter your face shape.  Later on we will discuss body shapes and necklines.

Let us start with a round face shape.

If your face is round you will want to keep away from designs and beads with a round overall shape.  Also keep away from chokers and go with longer length necklaces that will create the illusion of having a longer face. If you really want to wear a choker then try and find one with a hanging or elongated center pendant or stone.  Wear necklaces with angular or irregular shaped beads or different size elongated drops (like teardrop shaped beads or pendants) will also help to add to the illusion of length.  Chose earrings wear square, rectangular, elongated teardrops or elongated ovals.  Any shape or style that will bring the eye downward will accomplish the desired effect.  You also want to keep away from rounded necklines on your tops as well.  V-neck, boat neck or square neck tops will give a pleasing contrast to a round face.

You are probably thinking that circles are in style and therefore you want to wear them to be in style.  Remember it is better not to be a fashion plate and look spectacular than to dress as fashion dictates and look awful!

To get the fashion look of circles without fighting your facial features wear jewelry with elongated ovals instead of perfectly round shapes.  This type of jewelry will flatter you, while giving the illusion of circles.

Here are some beauty tips for you :)

To make your face appear thinner, sweep bronzer over your temples, in the hollow under your cheekbones and under your chin using a fluffy brush.  Highlight your forehead, bridge of your nose, cheekbones and tip of your chin with a lighter powder.
Avoid slicked, up hair dos and opt for the longer hair styles.  Fluffy is also better than flat.  Shag cuts and layered bangs help to elongate the face.

Here are some items from our jewelry that make those will a round face look beautiful!

Bali Beads, Pendants & Findings Part II

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

In small work shops far removed from urban cultures sterling silver artisans produce these pendants, beads and findings one at a time. It is done by hand using Charcoal fires to produce heat with hand-powered air pumps much like many of the blacksmiths down through the ages. A person can gently bring metals up to their melting temperatures, red hot shaping temperatures, and even do soldering.

These artisans blend copper and silver into a material that often has more silver in it than ordinary sterling silver making it easier to shape into the intricate patterns. Sterling silver must have at least 92.5% silver in it. The Bali items are often made with silver that is 95% silver or more. This helps the artisans do their best work. It also meets or exceeds the quality requirements of every nation.

The silver is then drawn and beaten into sheet and wire. Silver is first smelted into a pencil like shape. Then it can be beaten with hand tools into large diameter wire. That wire can be pulled through plates with holes that squeeze the wire smaller as it is pulled through each smaller hole. From time to time the silver might be reheated to soften it for easier work. Silver does harden quite a bit as you work it.

The wire is finally taken to its final size. It is then is cut to length and pushed and pulled into shapes. Other tiny bits naturally melt into tiny spheres, which are later separated by size. Now we have our pattern parts. Previously it was mentioned that the silver was beaten into sheets. Those sheets are cut and shaped into the overall shape of the pendant. Other sheets are cut and used to make the bezels that hold stones in place. Still more silver sheet can be used to form into the bails for the pendants.

Once all this is made the parts can be soldered together by the artists. Now we get to the true artistry, the ability to form these parts in pleasing patterns that gently echo culture and a universally decorative beautiful style. The parts are arranged on the sheet silver. Tiny bits of silver solder are used to firmly attach or weld the parts into place. Each is heated just enough. Then the pendant can be polished. Finally the gemstones that might be called for in the design are set. Final polishing is done and our Bali pendant is ready for export all over the world to jewelry makers who will make jewelry from them to grace your neck, arms or ears.

Bali beads and findings are done in the same manner, just in a smaller scale. When you see these items in your jewelry, be sure to reflect on the skilled hands that have created these little pieces of art. As you wear the jewelry, you can be comforted by the knowledge that the money you spent on this purchase is going to support true artists in the modern age. This is truly the best of global commerce. Just a note, you will sometimes see “Bali Style” instead of just the word “Bali” to describe the pendant or beads used in a piece of jewelry. It doesn’t mean that they are not artisan created, it just means it was not made in Bali. India is one of the other nations that have artisans that make beautiful pendants and beads, but if the item was made in India then it must say “Bali Style” not “Bali”. The Hill Tribes of Thailand also make very beautiful silver beads and pendants. We will tell you their story in future blog posts.

Here are a few of our pieces with these hand made works of art.

Extend your necklace wardrobe!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
Ever wish you necklace was longer???  You can make it so by adding a chain link bracelet to the end.  The only thing you must make sure of is that the clasps are compatible.  That is why I try to purchase my jewelry with lobster claw clasps.  Toggle clasps can be utilized the same way as long as the toggle bars and loops are compatible.  This method can be used as long as you are not wearing your hair up or if you have short hair :)   If you are wearing an outfit with a collar then it doesn’t matter whether or not you can see the back of your neck ;)

If you own two of the same type of necklace with ornate or small clasps you can two necklaces or a necklace and a bracelet together and the clasps will look like they are part of the overall pattern.  I have a lot of necklaces that are alike in different lengths because I like the layered look.  I usually will wear three necklaces together.  17″  24″ and 36″  or some variation on that theme.  It is important the necklaces be at least 4″ different in length to get the layer look.  It can be more than 4″ but I do not recommend it being less.

To lengthen by 2″ – 6″ I recommend buying necklace extenders.  Necklace extenders are pieces of chain with various types of clasps and rings to allow you to extend the length of your necklace.  These are used when the typical 7″ bracelet adds just too much length to the necklace.

Here are two of our necklace extenders.

Bali Beads, Pendants & Findings Part I

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Have you seen the term ”Bali” sterling silver pendants, beads or findings used in descriptions of jewelry? Have you ever wondered why the jeweler found it necessary to point this out?  Well, it is not only to let you know these pieces were made in Bali, it is to let you know that these pieces are a true work of art on their own.  These pieces are beautiful when you look at the whole piece overall. Yet if you look closer you will see they cleverly contain beautiful patterns made of countless tiny parts. Little solid beads, little circles, and runs of shaped wire all provide depth and detail. Some might assume these are commercially cast pieces that are from a master rubber mold or die. If look closely you will see that nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is far more interesting and shows us the best work of artistic people from far away places. Here is a hint for seeing the difference-Look for small variations in the patterns. Those variations are a result of hands at work. Not coldly consistent machinery. Hand made work varies a bit. Machine work is like making coins, all identical.

In the countryside of Bali sterling silver artisans using centuries old methods have learned to produce these pendants  & beads and handed it down generation to generation. Even the method used to manufacture these items make it true handwork. Charcoal is used to produce heat with hand-powered air pumps much like the blacksmiths of the horse and carriage times in the USA. A person can gently bring metals up to their melting temperatures, red hot shaping temperatures, and even do soldering.
These artisans blend copper and silver into a material that often has more silver in it than ordinary sterling silver. Sterling silver must have at least 92.5% silver in it. The Bali style items are often made with silver that is 95% silver or more. This helps the artisans do their best work. It also meets or exceeds the quality requirements of every nation.

In part II we will go into the actual making of the pendant or bead in more detail.

Here are a few pieces we have made with Bali components.

The History of Onyx

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

By Jeremy Foster

Onyx was very popular with the ancient Greeks and Romans. The name comes from the Greek word onyx, which means fingernail. The story is that one day; frisky Cupid cut the divine fingernails of his mother Venus with an arrowhead while she was sleeping. He left the clippings scattered on the sand and the fates turned them into stone so that no part of her heavenly body would ever perish (while black isn’t the color we normally associate with fingernails, back in ancient Greek times, onyx referred to almost all colors of chalcedony from fingernail white to dark brown and black). Years later, the Romans narrowed the term onyx to refer to black and dark brown colors of chalcedony. If the onyx was reddish brown and white, it was called sardonyx. Sardonyx was highly valued in Rome, especially for seals, because it was said to never stick to the wax. Onyx stones with even bands of color were made into cameos.

In jewelry as well as fashion, colors always seem to look crisper against a background of black. In many pieces of fine jewelry, that black backdrop has often been supplied by black onyx, chalcedony quartz with a fine texture and deep black color. Black onyx especially shines when it is used a backdrop for color play. The fine texture is ideal for carving, making it a favored material of lapidary artists both past and present. Onyx was often used as the perfect partner for the carved rock crystals and the vivid red of rubies found in Art deco designs. Today, black onyx can still be found in use as the backdrop for both carved opals and as the base for opal inlays with the deep black showing the dazzling opals to their best advantage

Lapis Lazuli

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Pronounced (lăpĭs) (lăz’ə-lē) Lapis lazuli, also known as just lapis, is a stone with one of the longest traditions of being considered a gem, with a history stretching back to 5000 BC. Lapis Lazuli is one of the oldest gemstones used in jewelry making, yet it is as popular today as it was in the past. Lapis lazuli was said to dispel melancholy and depression, and to cure recurring fevers. It was also said to impart ancient knowledge, and the wisdom to use it.

The astrological sign of lapis lazuli is Sagittarius. Lapis Lazuli is generally found in limestone and also has a significant amount of lazurite as well as pyrite, sodalite and mica. All of these components give the deep blue color of the stone additional flecks of gold, white and a bit of silver.

The reason that lapis lazuli has been so popular in jewelry making for so long is because it can be polished to a bright shine. However, its popularity goes farther than this. Lapis Lazuli has been used for more than just jewelry making over the past thousands of years. Lapis lazuli has been used for carvings of boxes, amazing figures, and vases to name a few. It has also been used in architecture for columns, mosaics, and many churches have been adorned with lapis lazuli for years. In ancient times, lapis lazuli was used for seals and even for eye shadow. Some of the most beautiful statutes from the Renaissance period were carved from lapis lazuli. If you ever visit a museum with Renaissance artwork or a museum with Egyptian artifacts you will easily be able to identify lapis lazuli in many of the pieces. Just keep your eye out for the bright blue stones or sculptures that have flecks of gold and white in them and you will know that you are looking at Lapis Lazuli that is thousands of years old!   Lapis still maintains it’s popularity today and you don’t even have to be royalty to wear it. But the beauty of this jewelry gives its wearer a regal appearance.

The finest lapis comes from the Badakshan area of Afghanistan. This source of lapis may be the oldest continually worked set of mines in the world, the same mines operating today having supplied the lapis of the pharaohs. Using this ancient source , Indus Valley Civilization’s artists used to make beautiful carvings and traders used to trade them to distant places. In addition to the Afghan deposits, lapis has been found in the Andes near Ovalle, Chile, where it is usually pale rather than deep blue. Other less important sources are the Lake Baikal region of Russia, Siberia, Angola, Burma, Pakistan, USA (California and Colorado) and Canada.
